Well it can mess up the entire childhood of the children. As they potentially end up bouncing from relative to relative while the parent is more concerned with getting drugs instead of taking care of there children.
Then in most cases people that are hooked on drugs end up catching STDs from sharing needles or unprotected sex. I have a family member whose wife had to take custody of her little brother after the mom who had a lifetime of drug use passed away from AIDS.
This has affected the little boy since the mother used while she was pregnant. He is not retarded but he does learn slower and is easy to confuse compared to other children his age if you give him directions. To date he does not have HIV but its something that is tested for every year all because of his mother.
Parents dont realize how much there choices effect there childrens lives. To this day even my cousins wife still has relationship issues stemming from her mom never being there for her while she was growing up and she ended up living with an aunt who didnt care for her and only was about getting a check from social services then looking out for her well being.
There also is another teenage sister who chose to live with her father rather then live with my cousin because she didnt like how her adult sister made her clean up her room and take showers etc. Now after 5 years her father(who also is rumored to have had drug issues in the past , which is how he met the mom) only took her in so he could get a check doesnt want her anymore. He lost his house and the word on the street is that the teenage sister is out prostituting.
Which means that its only a matter of time before she catches a STD , gets pregnant, ends up on drugs or a combination of all of the above. Which is the same path that her mother took.
Drugs are powerful and can tear a family apart and the affects can/will be felt for multiple generations. As none of my cousins wifes siblings are going to have normal lives all because of there mothers drug use.
